If you're like me, you need a quick lesson on exactly what it means to replace your recessed housings with LED lighting. It's a good thing that as a Marketing Associate for the showrooms, I work with Lighting Specialists, so I can pass on the knowledge to you- our readers.
Most people know recessed lighting as "can lighting," and most people also use regular light bulbs for CFLs in their recessed housings. There are a few drawbacks to using regular incandescent bulbs - they burn out quickly, they aren't very energy efficient, and a few drawbacks to using CFLs- they are not aesthetically pleasing, and fluorescent light is considered by most people unpleasant and unflattering- although they do last longer and are more energy efficient. Rest assured, there is a third option- LED Lighting. Wait! Don't leave! I'm not suggesting we light your house up like the inside of a space ship! LED lighting has come a long way in the last ten years. Now, you can get soft white LED lighting for your home. So you get all the benefits of the energy savings and long lasting bulb life without sacrificing the look of great lighting. We'd like to highlight a specific product that makes changing over to LED lighting super easy- Cree's 4" and 6" Recessed Downlights fit most existing housings and are easy to install. You simply screw the connector into your light socket and insert the recessed downlight into your recessed lighting housing. As you can see from the images below, you are left with a clean, finished look. At $31.15 a piece, you can't beat that! Next week in our Showrooms we will be displaying images of different interior design schemes inspired by Visual Comfort & Co. Lighting. To kick it off, we want to show you just how versatile good design can be with four different looks inspired by the Goodman Hanging Lamp. To get more inspiration for interior design inspired by great lighting visit our Pinterest page.
If you're in love with the Visual Comfort look- you'll find a whole pin board just for this line. If you've had a chance to read your July/August 2015 Copy of House Beautiful yet, then you know ultramarine blue is in. In 2014- Robins Egg Blue was in, and so far this year Aqua Blues have stolen the spotlight, However House Beautiful's most recent Color Crush article suggests, "You can't resist ultramarine!" Vermeer. Girl With a Pearl Earring. 1665. Netherlands. Ultramarine is a color with a rich history. During the Renaissance, ultramarine pigment (the hue base for dyes and paints) was a luxury item. Artists used the vibrant color sparingly - for the most special of paintings. How can you argue with design history like that? House Beautiful suggests many ways to incorporate ultramarine blue details into any room in your home. You could add a pop of color with an ultramarine end table in a sitting area, or a luxuriously plush throw in your bedroom. You could even be so bold as to cover your entire sofa with a deep blue vibrant fabric. However, here at Mayer Lighting Showroom, we suggest refreshing your look by splurging on this gorgeous lamp by Visual Comfort & Co. And you can feel like a genius yourself by tapping into the design genius of Renaissance masters. You've seen them everywhere. You've seen them as table top decorations. You've seen them candle lit. You've seen them as light fixtures on porches for years, and now you see them in design magazines for nearly every room in the house. You may be wondering, "Is the lantern trend flickering out?" We say, "Not yet." They've been lighting everything from castles to street lamps for thousands of years. We'd say this look has some real staying power. Trends for finishes come and go, but the lantern look- it's here to stay. But, what if you're a little bored and looking for something fresh? We've got just the remedy here: Seven Fresh Lantern Looks 1. Liven things up in your kitchen with a playful shape. Did the fixture make you look twice? Think about it. Have you every seen something like it before? If it evokes a fresh feeling in the showroom, imagine how much you'd enjoy it in your own home.
2. Make a statement outdoors. Sometimes, we simply find it easier to put our person stamps on the interior spaces of our homes. But that doesn't mean you should neglect adding character outside! Are you looking to add elegance? Modernize your look? Or perhaps complete the cottage feel of your home? New lighting can transform the feel of your home instantly.
3. Soften bedroom lighting with a shade. Perhaps one of the last places you'd venture to put a lantern is in a bedroom. However, Visual Comfort and Co.'s Caged Lantern with a shade is contemporary and soft at the same time.
4. Escape... in your private bath. Who wouldn't like to sweep away to an old world New England cottage after a long week at work? Hinkley cleverly installed this outdoor lantern over in a rustic bathroom, adding ambiance and to a simple, yet sophisticated space. 5. Light the way with Lanterns Extend your welcome all the way to the street with path lights, but don't stop there! Add ambiance with these lantern style path lights- they set the night aglow. 6. Add Simple Elegance to your Breakfast Nook Update your breakfast nook with a simple, sophisticated lantern like this one by Visual Comfort & Co. We can just see this mini lantern hung with a sprig of holly and mistletoe for the Holidays.

Remember, we can get anything you see on our Visual Comfort Gallery board for you! If we don't have it in stock, we can order it! Lighting tip: When you are considering fixtures for your home, remember, our Visual Comfort & Co. light fixtures almost always come in different finishes, and different finishes can create an entirely different design effect. For example, take a look at these three images below. Visual Comfort's Darlana lantern comes in aged iron, gilded iron, and polished nickel. So far, 2015 has been an exciting year in the lighting industry, and our Showrooms certainly haven't missed out. We asked our resident lighting experts, "What are today's lighting trends?" Mayer has the scoop; here are the top five: 1. Above Average Bulbs There are more light bulb options today than there ever have been before. Green options are becoming popular not only because of energy savings and environmental consciousness, but because the quality of LED light has drastically improved lately. Most people assume LED means you are going to get light with a blue tint, however that's not necessarily true. LED lights come in warm color temperatures as well. Nostalgic bulbs are also very popular; you may know them as "Edison Bulbs," even if you don't know anything about them or where to find them. Nostalgic bulbs look fantastic in fixtures where bulbs are exposed, not to mention they make a contemporary style statement all on their own. We carry a variety of nostalgic bulbs in our showroom at all times. Please hold while I go set a few aside; why haven't I done this already?! 2. One of a Kind Choosing fixtures with unique finishes is the way to go to add character to your home. EllaHome and Regina Andrew are two popular lines that we carry in our showrooms. I should really just let the fixtures speak for themselves. 3. The Industrial Look The more unpretentious, salvaged, repurposed, and even factory floor look of the Industrial Style has become popular in lighting and the options are limitless. Whether your style is more rustic or modern, there are options out there for you. Visual Comfort Lighting, Available at Mayer Lighting Showroom A More Rustic Look. Hinkley Lighting, Available at Mayer lighting Showroom 4. Designer Lighting An increasing number of homeowners are looking for high design and style when it comes to light fixtures. Two of our most popular high design lines are Visual Comfort & Co. and Hubbarton Forge. Lighting by these designers has the ability to transcend time. What does that mean? Much like a little black dress, high design never goes out of style. These fixtures have a way of looking traditional and classic, and young and fresh at the same time. Hubbardton Forge, Available at Mayer Lighting Showroom Visual Comfort & Co., Available at Mayer Lighting Showroom 5. A Return to Decorative Fixtures Gone are the days of sticking to one family of lighting for your entire house. Unique light fixtures definitely aren't going to blend into the background. Instead, they can become a feature item adding personality to any room. We can help with that! The experts at any Mayer Lighting Showroom can help you find a way to say "IT" with your lighting design- whatever "it" is for you. Lanterns- they come in all shapes, sizes, and finishes. And they aren't just for outside anymore! Hinkley Lighting, Available at Mayer lighting Showroom Progress Lighting, Available at Mayer Lighting Showroom
